History
jence
formed in Essex in 1996 as “The Gents” and spent a few years
learning their trade on the live scene throughout Essex and London
(the usual suspects – Dublin Castle, Bull & Gate, Rock Garden,
Mean Fiddler etc..). A
few demos down the line they were signed to Ilford-based Granny
Smiths Records under the management of Ringo Mountbatten, and a
3-track CD single “Yeah Times Nine Plus Two” was released
(limited run of 1000 units). The
single received local airplay and was not distributed nationally.
A divorce from the management and record company later ensued
and was followed by a period of reflection and re-grouping. The last couple of years have seen jence move forward,
recording and producing a full-scale album.
The
involvement of Nick Romero as a principal writer and actor in
various Radio sketch shows and sitcoms has led to jence
providing musical accompaniment for comic songs and theme tunes as a
side project. This has
led to performances at the Edinburgh fringe festival as well as
being broadcast on national radio.
In
addition Doc Spoons is a renowned and respected performer and drum
teacher, writing a monthly column in Drummer magazine: “Doctor
Spoons Drum Remedies”.

Sound
The jence
specialise in intelligent, crunchy pop/rock, with a rich
guitar-based sound, and a fat ballsy rhythmic backbone.
The soundscape is punctuated with trademark block harmony
vocals. The songs have
an amusing, sardonic and occasionally dark-comic lyrical content.
Some of the wonderful bands to have inspired and influenced
jence are The Beatles, Queen, The Police and The Red Hot Chili
Peppers, to name but a few.
