"I just wanted to
tell you where we're going and
where we have been."
The Light's "EPIC JOURNEY" began in 2002 when four likely
lads walked into a rehearsal
studio for the first time. 3 hours later old bands were forgotten,
new dreams were created
and a new sound was born. They
all went to the same school so they have a lot of history. They also
have a telepathic
sense when it comes to making music together. They
would describe their music as Indie Rock but their songs cross many
music genres and
at the end of day they just like playing catchy tunes and rocking
out. Their
songs have been described by others as "anthemic
with sing-a-long choruses" "epic rock" and
"heavy pop". They
have played most of the main venues in Birmingham as well as
successful shows
in London, Liverpool and Northampton.

Paul Malek first got into music when he heard the mid 90’s brit
pop bands such as Cast, Shed Seven and Oasis. He knew that this
music was different and increasing
in it’s popularity. It was not until Paul left school in 1998 that
he decided to pick up a
guitar and learn how to play. At the tender age of 16 Paul
had his first guitar and spoke with a former pupil of Warley High
School, Ash
Green, (Paul’s best and loyalist friend). They decided that from
the start that
they wanted to do something different with their lives and form a
band.
Ash Green was brought up on the sounds of the Beatles and early Bee
gee’s recordings
and bought his first drum kit at the age of 16. Whilst the pair
were learning to play
their instruments they had their first rehersal in Ash’s parent’s
front room. It was apparent from the start that there was indeed
something there’. As
the pair continued to reherse and progress with their musical
abilities it soon became clear that their normal day jobs were not
enough to satisfy their
creative abilities.
Paul and Ash decided to look for other
members to complete the likely duo and spoke with another former
pupil of their
school who decided he would have a go at playing bass guitar.
Unfortunately it did not
work out and the 3 piece band then known as “Malash” slowly
fluttered away. Paul
and Ash decided that they would not give up that easily and so when
on the look for
new members to complete the duo. During their search Paul went to
a local pub and watched
a small band known as ‘Best served chilled’. The band was
a four- piece with a very familiar person on lead guitar. It was
another former
member of Warley High School, Andrew Brookes.
Andy Brookes was bought up mainly on the sounds of the Beatles and
Rolling Stones.
Whilst Andy was reaching adolescence the late 90’s brit pop was at
a all time high.
However at the age of 14 yrs their was only one band for Andy,
this was a not so well
known ‘grunge band’ known as Nirvana. Andy was amazed by
the sheer difference in their music which inspired him to pick up a
guitar and learn
how to play. As Andy was learning to play guitar he soon became one
of the most popular ‘lads’
in school. By the last year of High school Andy Brookes
was one of the most advanced guitarists in the School. He formed a
band with 3 other lads
in his year. After having left school these lads continued
playing and had interest from a record label namely Sony. Due to the
lack of commitment from
other band members the band split up and went their separate
ways.
It was in October 2002 that Andy Brookes was asked to join Paul and
Ash’s band. He
was quickly informed that they were looking to write their own music
and play them at venues.
Andy attended a practice with the lads and was soon taken
aback with their musical abilities. It was then when Andy decided
that this was the
band for him. With the line up almost complete the lads decided
that they would need to
draft in a bass player to complete the rhythm section. The
lads then went on the search for a bass player who would fit the
criteria required.
In November 2002 Paul
was working at the Leisure Centre in Netherton when another
familiar face walked through the door. It was Phil Pullinger,
another former
pupil of Warley high School. Paul knew that Phil played guitar and
asked him to come along
to an ‘audition’ as a bass player.
Phil Pullinger was bought up on the sounds of Dire straits, The
Beatles and Chris
Rea it was not until he began secondary school that his musical
taste matured. In
the first year of school Phil began listening to music such as ,
Nirvana, Greenday, Hole
and Sound garden. At the tender age of 13 years Phil had
his first guitar bought for him and learnt how to play. At the age
of 14 years Phil
began playing drums for a ‘grunge band’ and slowly progressed
into a ‘Sex
Pistols covers band’. However Phil still really enjoyed playing
his guitar and
singing. In 1995 Phil began playing Acoustic numbers in venues
round Dudley and
Birmingham with another friend playing original songs and covers
such as Oasis and Blur songs. In 1996 Phil decided to concentrate
his abilities on
the bass guitar and joined a band in which he sang and played. In
2000 Phil joined a more
mature band as a ‘lead guitarist’ and played venues around
Birmingham. During this time, Phil decided that he felt more comfortable
as a bass guitarist and left the band then known as ‘Bedswerver’.
Phil went along to an ‘audition’ with the other lads and soon
realised that this
was the band for him. The sheer quality of songs already written by
the 3 piece line
up was already of a high standard. On that very same rehersal Phil
decided to join the band
and the line up was complete. What started out as a 2 piece
gradually turned into a full band with all members of the same
school sharing
their musical abilities and creative ideas. This
was the day ‘The Light’ formed and all other bands were
forgotten, an honest
taste of meaningful lyrics and ‘catchy music’.
