A story
from yesterday
In the
sixties groups were too willing to conform to the present day pop
standards and providing the overall sound was nice then most groups
were quite happy. Only the more progressive groups were abandoning
these set forms.
The
three musicians from Liverpool who formed Zelda Plum Rob Luke Lead
Guitar/Vocals Les Thompson Bass Guitar/Vocals and John Kenyon on
Drums were striving to get away from the standards set by most pop
groups.
From the
beginning they were creating a new type of music which was directed
towards the very soul of their audiences. Heavy Metal Rock.
As with
every new art form people tended to be hostile. However so convinced
in the rightness of what they were doing they had little regard to
what people thought of them as individuals provided that their music
was kept sacred.
This
distinctive sound that was Zelda Plum was not made by three
musicians but rather by three experimenters in sound. The harshness
and destructiveness of their music was born from their energy
originality and hatred of the banal flavoring of pop music. They
soon created a large following on Merseyside especially at the
Cavern Club.
They
were riding a crest of a wave, which surely they themselves created.
Nonconformists. An image to be copied later by many local bands.
ZELDA
PLUM…not just a group but a happening.
