Depicted
as ‘the perfect place to enjoy a relaxing break’ and with a
steady flow of stop-over tourists and yuppie city sailors sipping
‘g and t’s’ on the Solent, its not surprising the locals of
the Isle of Wight need to find their own foundation. Which is maybe
why the island is becoming a breeding ground for up and coming new
bands and Kody are the newest and loudest of them all? Formed in
2016, the Ryde four-piece have studied their peers and created a
modern and thoughtful British Rock Band that dishes out big songs,
in a big noise with a big passion. Their local gigs on the island
started as unorganised riotous punk rock affairs who’s reputation
got onto the mainland early this year. Before long, word of mouth
spread and with an attitude of ‘we’ll play anywhere’ they were
asked to play anywhere and did; from University bars, to private
parties, schools, town halls and established venues such as
London’s Marquee. Soon local press where getting wind of their
gigs and a relentless fixture list, and fanzines such as Tiny Bombs,
Yuppie, Box, Repeat and Vanity Project where starting to write about
them.
They carried on touring and somewhere on the way picked up a Welsh
tour manager, Taff, and an old Ambulance as a tour bus. A demo by
the band recorded by Nick Smith earned them live sessions around the
country and a European broadcasted show on British Forces Radio. By
the summer the band had clocked 70 gigs in the year and were tired
and ill but had earned a healthy and loyal following. When they
returned home for a rest, they were offered a deal with the new Isle
of Wight based label, Tidal. They set off to the big city and set
about recording with ex Zomba producer Simon Hanhart at Miloco
studios in London. Despite strange reactions to Czech lager, the van
being broken into and bomb scares, the recording session went well
and they at last got back to the safety of the Isle of Wight, to
prepare themselves for their next dates.
Kody’s sound is based around the astute song-writing talent and
amazing voice of Gareth Icke, They have created a style full of
energy and youthful aggression that sits on great and memorable
songs. Brothers Oliver and Turlough Ducie, and Tim Pritchard
complete the line up of this huge if somewhat chaotic new talent.
