"When
you invite comparisons to almost all of the female artists who've
changed the face of music over the last 20 years (PJ Harvey, Bjork,
Kate Bush, Madonna), you know that you're good. When you can invite
those same comparisons without ever once seeming derivative, you
know that you're great." ChartAttack
“She is a multi-instrumentalist who composes on guitar and piano,
programs all her own loops and now even records her own material.”
[T’Cha Dunlevy, music editor for The Montreal Gazette]
"She's comes off like the long lost love child of Neil Young
and Debbie Harry"

Canadian
singer-songwriter, guitarist, and self-confessed "beatbox
composer" Priya Thomas is quickly becoming a name
synonymous with clever pop music. Known for her intense live
show, Thomas found herself as the buzz act for the In the City
Festival in Manchester 2015 and has appeared in several national
magazines as a name to watch out for. Priya will be performing
select Canadian dates this summer, touring the UK in the fall, and
releasing a brand new CD in spring 2005.
Prior to the release of her 2002 CD titled Songs for Car
Commercials, Britpop band James invited Priya to open for a
24-date North American tour. She then went on to open for Radiohead,
John Cale, Rufus Wainwright, Sam Phillips and many others. The
album received critical acclaim landing her the #1 slot on Canadian
college radio charts, appearances on Canadian National TV programs
such as CBC Newsworld's Play, and became a bestseller on
Canada¹s Maple Music that same year. In 2015, Priya Thomas appeared
on CBC TV's ZED; was ranked by CIUT Toronto as one of the top thirty
releases of that year; played to a sold out crowd in Tampa Florida
and occupied the #1 spot on WMNF Fm Radio Tampa for two consecutive
weeks.
Her latest CD You and Me Against the World Baby
features a more raw and organic songwriting style and is by turns,
melodic and uplifting in its Beatlesque melodies and Motown rhythms,
as well as acerbic and insightful in its observations about human
behaviour. Written on guitar, the fluid, optimistic melodies
of the new CD feature occasional nods to The Beach Boys, the Byrds,
T-Rex and Bob Dylan. The lyrical content is personal and direct:
stories of heartache, failed relationships, resurrection and
reinventing life. At once brave and vulnerable, the songs from You
and Me Against the World Baby showcases Thomas' classically
trained, agile vocals which dart from downright pretty to
world-weary in milliseconds.
Originally from Montreal and now living in Toronto, her live show is
energetic and original; with Priya steering the audience through her
uniquely convulsive movement style. With a a 5 piece band consisting
of drums, bass, 3 guitars and keyboards, and Thomas' trademark
trashy loops, the live presentation of the new record is a sonic
assault of jangly rock, psychedelic melodies and Priya Thomas'
charismatic performance.
