The Starlets are Biff
Smith (vocals / guitar), Mark McSwiggan (backing vocals / guitar),
Stephen McGourty (bass), Craig Laurie (drums), Nigel Baillie (brass)
and Iain White (strings). Based in Glasgow, belonging nowhere, the
band wish to create an alternative pop music, both romantic and
melancholy, hopeful and heartbroken. A range of influences, from the
Velvet Underground via the Go-Betweens and Prefab Sprout to old
movie soundtracks, have all inspired a sound which can be heard on
their two albums so far, debut “Surely tomorrow you’ll feel
blue” and follow up ”Further into night forever”.
Currently recording
their third album for SL Records, the band try to play live when
they can and this year has found them playing shows in Glasgow,
Edinburgh, London, Leeds, and, for the first time, Tokyo. The new
album is expected sometime in the summer of 2005.
Glasgow, for all its
darkness and violence, has areas of beauty and moments of grace to
reward those with the patience and desire to find them. If music
reflects its environment then it can be said to be The Starlets
ambition to both celebrate and lament the experience of trying to
find beauty in bleak circumstances.
Come on in.
