Finalist
in this year’s BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Awards, playing to a full
house at the Sage, Gateshead, and featured on Mike’s Radio 2 folk
programme in December 2005, James and other finalists were described
by Mike Harding as “the cream of the UK’s young acoustic folk
and roots scene”.
James
writes all his own songs and is reluctant to categorise his work. He
has a wide and eclectic taste in music which has coloured his own
compositions and is equally at home with rock, folk, blues, jazz,
indie and just about anything else that crosses his path. He would
list just a few of his influences as Bob Dylan, Nick Drake, Jeff
Buckley, Bob Marley, Radiohead, Robert Johnson, Jimi Hendrix, Bach
and Rachmaninov.
James
own songs are beautiful and haunting, songs which stay with you long
after you have finished listening. In his solo performances, his
style varies from contemporary folk to trad blues. He also sings his
own distinctive arrangements of songs by the likes of Jeff Buckley,
Bob Dylan, Robert Johnson and James Taylor.
With
his band, James offers an 3-piece acoustic set with his
multi-talented band members, Ali and Nathan, each of them
alternating between piano, guitar, bass, violin and harmonica.
What
others have to say about James:
“...
a lad I admire greatly myself, he writes brilliant songs.”
Mike Harding at the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Awards
“James
Chadwick’s … songs are beautiful and emotional and his talents
are becoming increasingly recognized by accomplished musicians and
young fans alike.” - Folkwit
“…
a very welcome, intellectual
reminder of the serene, calming effect that music can have on anyone.”
The Herald and Post
“…
hints of Jeff Buckley and Elliott
Smith” Giz Butt (former prodigy guitarist)
“James
Chadwick’s songs are often melancholy, but rarely gloomy. By the
time the cello kicks in on ‘Serotonin’ I defy any angst-ridden
teenager not to be humming ‘…
everything gonna be all right’ ”. Siren Music
“Cambridge
legend, rising star of the UK folk scene. A talented teenager who
wow’s us every time with his unconventional folk sound.” The
Living Room, Cambridge
“James
Chadwick’s band ... dazzled listeners with an eclectic mix of
music... Band members alternated between guitar, bass, violin, and
keyboards. Do yourself a favour - catch them live at a venue near
you soon, they’re worth it.” Ian Duncan, Maxey
Festival
“...the
James Chadwick band played a relaxed,
bluesey set with amazing guitar from the front-man, James.” Band
of the Year 2005
“James
Chadwick rounded the evening off with an excellent folk set, wowing
the assembled brethren with his uncanny virtuosity. 10/10!”
